Sarah Palin’s supporters are so dumb

I like what my friend Adam Conover wrote here about the various “Sarah Palin’s supporters are so dumb” videos that have been making the rounds:

It’s the easiest thing in the world to find the dullest, least media-savvy members of a group, shove a microphone in their face, and allow them to make themselves look foolish. You could do the same thing ( Read more... )

I looked it up. He's Derrick Ashong and he makes me want to vote for him. I can't help thinking this will not be the last time I hear about him.

I attempt to find clever and intelligent conservatives and friend them on my LiveJournal.

I've found plenty -- but they don't discuss politics. I've found plenty of intelligent right-of-center LJ'ers who do discuss politics -- but they're actually moderates who lean a little right, not really CONSERVATIVES.

If you've got any suggestions of people I should be reading, I'd like to hear it.

Thank you for understand that putting a camera in people's faces, especially when they're unprepared, is a good way to make them look like idiots.

Hell, I'm used to being in front of cameras, I've been a damn spokesperson during natural disasters and I'm still nervous. You grab some shmoe off the street, plunk him in front of the one-eyed monster, and you've got the perfect opportunity to make him or her look *stupid*.

I'm not sure it actually is important to find smart Republicans to challenge Democratic ideas. To my mind, the Democratic Party is itself far to the right of where it should be, and the really important critiques are left critiques that are already structurally marginalized by the mechanics of American politics. I'm not talking here about Nader, who I regard as unserious, but about people like Russ Feingold and Bernie Sanders. They're in the legislature but their ideas can't usually get a lot of traction; meanwhile, Democratic ideas already get enough pull rightward from right-wing Democrats and Joe Lieberman. Smart Republicans are not necessarily going to add a lot that's constructive.

One-party rule is not good, but it's not a stable situation either. I actually hope the Republican Party completely dies someday so the Democrats can cleave off a social-democratic/liberal left party.

Pretty much agree. I'd also like to see more participation from the Greens and the Libertarians, whose viewpoints I think should be part of the discussion even when I disagree with them. I'd like to see more than two serious national parties ( ... )

What I did is quit following politics cold turkey.

I realized that every day I would read Glenn Greenwald's column, get mad, and not be able to do anything about any of it.

I had to unsubscribe from blogs, quit watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (both of which I really enjoyed), etc.

It's definitely been the right decision. I hear bits here and there, but my investment in it all is zero, so there's no anger or frustration anymore.
