"Dizziness Due to Success"

A friend told me a story on Friday:

back when I started playing in amateur chess tournaments, 1996, I learned to play to just destroy children or weaker opponents. that was after my first whupping from a 9-year old player, that I learned that. FINISH HIM.

there is a sinister phrase in chess lore: "dizziness due to success". In chess, it means blundering away a winning position because you were swept away by the emotions of being JUST about to win BEAUTIFULLY.

This is why I wrote about the value of a solid majority. Just because Obama seems to have more than 50.1% of the vote doesn't mean that anyone can start counting their chickens. Between voter intimidation, electronic vote manipulation, and the Bradley effect it's not out of the question that McCain's team - the same team that helped a collossal idiot failure like Bush win two elections - will manage to squeak out a victory.

That's why I'm going to be phone banking at the SF Obama campaign office today from 10AM until I get bored or frustrated. Consider looking up your local campaign office or making calls from your house, getting involved in other ways, or just donating again.

Don't let a nine year old sneak up on you. FINISH HIM.
