With the whole "collapse of the world economy" thing I've been reading up on gold as a "might want to keep a little around unless the shit hits the fan" measure. Several countries mint their own gold coins according to their own standards. We toured the mint in Ottawa in '06. There's a glass-walled catwalk that shows all the machinery and processes they use to actually make these things. It was fascinating, and like most such tours I would have loved to stay for about a day, just staring and watching. No photography allowed, sadly.
