Sports Event

catbear's comment reminded me of another idea that I had: The Sports Event. Every Monday night, Sports Teams come out to the Sports Stadium for the Sports Event. Five minutes before the match starts the players are told what particular sport they will be playing that evening. Maybe it's something common like football, basketball, or hockey. Maybe it's ( Read more... )

This sounds good. Rather like THE WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS from my youth. You didn't know what THRILLS OF VICTORY or AGONIES OF DEFEAT you'd see, but you knew that there would be wipe-outs and cheering, no sappy life history cutaways, and always -- always -- Jim McKay.

This is such an excellent idea, I have to wonder: Are the Japanese doing it already?

Also, why do you get to define why an athlete should be rewarded?

Because it's my fantasy, and I'm the one who gets to design it around my personal value judgements?

You might as well say you want stage actors to get together and do improv because you're tired of seeing them perform scripted parts over and over again.

I *do* say that, they *do* have improv competitions and they *are* good, especially the live ones. I miss UofA Comedy Corner.

hahaha, yeah! That would be fucking awesome! This reminds me of office olympics...which should happen far more often than it does.

I guess I lose geek cred if I note that there's a vaguely similar idea in Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series.

Ah, yes, I just posted the same thing. I've always wanted to see this made real.

Why does this lose us geek cred? I can't think of anything geekier than sitting around reading "Out of Phaze" when other people are having sex.

this reminds me of my idea for the Indoor Pentathalon.
five events - pool, darts, pub trivia, pinball, slam poetry.
five team members, of which four (team picks which four) must compete in every event.

best overall rankings by all members across all events determines winner.
first prize is a trip to rehab.

I whole-heartedly endorse this event. I'm not sure I could medal individually (I do general raconteurism rather than slam poetry), but I would definitely be good for the team.
