matrushkaka speaks very well, but every once in a while she comes across a word that she's only read and isn't sure how to say. This also happens to hearing people - I had a friend who called Yosemite park "Yaw-see-maw-tee" and called pedestrian crossings "Ped Zings" - but it happens more with matrushkaka because even when someone speaks she just sees the lip movemment ( Read more... )

In Brooklyn, Cortelyou Rd. is pronounced "cuh-TILL-yuh". At least, in parts of my family and their friends, it is.

Also it's spelled Yngwie. And having seen a recent concert video of his... it's possible to look metal and rock out, and still accept the fact that the leather pants and bolero jacket with no shirt that you could once fit into 20 years ago now makes you look like 10 pounds of shit stuffed into an elaborately embroidered 5-pound leather bag.

The Swedish guitar god has, however, not reached this level of understanding.

And the camera is not kind.

Yeah, I linked to the Wikipedia page (which provides the correct spelling) with the phonetic pronunciation that I use to answer the inevitable question "how do you pronounce that name, if not in the correct way?"

Oh, and I just tripped up recently on Gough St, which I had no idea was pronounced "Goff" St.
