A while ago I wrote a post in defense of Apple's TPM. I defined the bright line between "good DRM" and "bad DRM" as the difference between "optional DRM" and "compulsory DRM". You know, I had a sort of snarky thing to say here but actually, even the information implied in the snark would tread too dangerously. *shrug* Hackers don't know everything and they probably shouldn't encourage other people to cauterize parts of their brain just because they cauterized their own and didn't die immediately.

There's a distinction between "encouraging other people to cauterize their brain" and "showing people how to cauterize their brain". Even if you accept the "cauterize" characterization (which I don't), the third party developer situation was a lot less like a teenage peer pressure group and a lot more like a community of artists.
