Undercutters Wireless™

I hate for-pay wireless access points at coffee shops. I wouldn't mind paying a fair price - let's say *triple* their cost. $60/month for a *really* good DSL line, average of 20 wireless users per day - that's a cost of 9.8 cents per customer, or 30 cents per customer retail. Seems fair enough ( Read more... )

My frustration with my boyfriend's insistence of patronizing Starbucks on the weekends has to do with the egregious amount they charge for wireless.

Of course, he can't stand any of the non-chain coffee shops near me, so it's a losing battle.

There was a similar scheme in hotels before they all made internet access free for all rooms. For example, in Best Western, you got 1 day of internet access (through a jack) for something like $10 to $20, depending on the city. Someone would set up a wireless router, with the node name "Slip5bucksinroom203". Of course I'd slip a fiver under the door, it was cheaper for me and much more convenient than being shackled to the desk instead of lying in bed with the laptop.

I liked to think the wireless router guy made a nice profit over the daily access fee.

yup, I'm on the Fon program. actually, they only charge 2000yen for their routers here... way less than the $30USD on their website...

haven't been on any other Fon routers yet... but one of these days...

Hey it's Jacqueline from FON here. I thought you might be interested hearing about the Fonbucks campaign success:

FON ended up giving away just under 7000 routers; 5,000 more than they anticipated. And these Foneros don’t lie! Fon saw a huge increase of Fon hotspots in highly dense, Starbucks populated areas.

Fon’s been having a lot of fun with this campaign. Check out the latest fun with Starbucks and meet Fon’s new favorite matador (Joselito):
