Deli Owners Who Should Be Fired

Today I had brunch with creepyanonymous, magpiebofh, gaping_asshole, and sploof. Creepy mentioned a famous old deli here in LA named "Ships". I can only assume that anyone who decided to name a business after the third person present tense conjugation of "to ship", a verb in common in the retail and catering industry, did so (several decades) before they realizing that Google searches for Read more... )

SHIPS was a coffee shop. In the Googie style. Big difference btw delicatessens and coffee shops...

There's a great book called Googie that's all about LA coffee shops and you can see Ships in there. It was in Westwood. Think Mel's Diner. The one on Sunset used to be Ben Franks and used to be a lot like Ships.

Coffee shop by title, but they did awesome corned beef and pastrami sandwiches when I was a kid. And I remember a pretty good matza ball soup, though that might have been a seasonal thing.

I want to find another place with toasters on the tables. I like making my own toast.
