Visiting San Francisco

Apr 13, 2006 11:49

My friend Len is visiting San Francisco this weekend. He asked me for recommendations and things to do. It's been a while since I've spent significant time there, but here's what I could think of. Feel free to add your own suggestions. His friends are vegetarian, and they'd appreciate veggie suggestions.

You'd think so, if you didn't attend a Bunny Jam yourself. It's festive but intentionally disturbing, specifically because of the anthropomorphosed animals. It's something like an Easter-themed haunted house.

If you DO get stuck in the Fisherman's wharf area:
1) Musee Mechanique. Ancient predecessors to arcade games, including LAUGHING SAL (guaranteed to make some child burst into tears at some point during your visit), a "spirit typewriter" that slowly taps out your fortune, grip meters, and peep show viewers.

2) Take the boat to Alcatraz and rent the audio tour -- the audio special effects are astounding. (For the deafies, the defining moment: you are asked to go into a cell and close the door. As you do, you can hear the cell door slamming and lockdown noises in ultra-3d. Chills!)

3) Under no circumstances have any kind of soup in a bread bowl.

Other:
Best Dim Sum in SF is wildly argued, but if you have only one chance, I'd go with Yank Sing since they usually have inventive "california cuisine" modern dim sum dishes.

Exploratorium is the best museum for messing with science. There's a loop of chain on a spindle. I can watch it ALL DAY and still none of my PhD friends can explain WHY it does that.

When I visited they told us they didn't do the cell door thing any more cos the locks jammed one day and took some time to unjam.

If you don't go to Fisherman's Wharf, how will you see "panhandling guy hiding behind self-supported bush"?

My friend Don has a really good rant about why we hate the Bushman but I forget how it goes.
