I like to believe that people want to do the right thing, but they're lazy and don't always know the right thing. Maybe that's not true, but it's nice to hold on to.

Note that Hearing people are too good for subtitles. They find they detract from the picture. What's that say for all the deaf/hard-of-hearing people who can't enjoy a film completely otherwise? Are they getting a per se shittier experience? Man, that sure must suck.
That guy sends an amazingly bad message. Wouldn't it be worth just protesting the film, at this point?

Good point. Most theaters have 1.33 aspect ratio screens, although the actual film frame is projected at least as 1.85 Panavision and as wide as 2.66 Cinemascope. That leaves a lot of room below the frame for subtitles.
