Fixing Dad's PC

I'm back home, fixing Dad's PC. The good news is that I didn't take this trip to plug in a loose monitor cable: dad's computer was definitely beyond his ability to repair. Shame on the AppleCare folks for not knowing this instantly.

Not only did they not know it instantly: I actually fished for this exact answer and they did not know it.

(Another answer would be to reset the parameter RAM -- hold down CMD-OPT-P-R as soon as you hit the power button until the machine "bongs" an extra time or two.)

Tried that one. Didn't work. I was ready to boot in safe mode and delete a few settings files from the Preferences folder when I remembered the remote desktop backdoor.

Not only did they not know it instantly: I actually fished for this exact answer and they did not know it.

That's asinine. It took me 7 minutes with Google to find out about Safe Mode.

I think the moral of the story is that you should check Google before you call support.
