matrushkaka and I are visiting my parents in San Luis Obispo. The last time I was here I installed a regular
Linksys WRT-54GS with mixed results. I had to monkey with the antenna position but the signal wouldn't cross two walls between the computer room and the living room. Dad just got a laptop, and last week my brother came out and installed a new
Belkin Pre-N MIMO router.
Their ad copy is not kidding. what makes the test even more impressive is that the router is on the wrong side of the house: it has to get through two walls and some cars in the driveway to reach all the way out here. I am officially impressed. If you have signal problems in your house, get a MIMO router.
(I confess that I don't completely understand what MIMO does: whether it simply chooses which antenna to use, or whether it uses constructive interference to "steer" the sensitivity of the array. The normally helpful Wikipedia
is not much help.)
