ronebofh I think the Democrats lost the election way back in 2002, when they were rolling over for the president in both the House and the Senate. How could they run against him in 2004 after doing exactly what he wanted them to do?

I think it's possible to square both. The Democratic party does "represent the necessarily diverse interests of everyone else", but "everyone else" has been whittled down significantly with concessions to lots of minor groups including the ones I mentioned. The key point is that the concessions appeal to a group without alienating another one: the NRA doesn't care about concessions to pro-life activists, 911 terror victims don't care about concessions to southern baptists, etc.
