Cloud

He was a cloud
of a magnitude so small
he didn't have a name.
An evanescence scarcely darker
than the overall gray
of the dreary day.
Most of the people below
went about their business
without ever noticing he was there,
but if you bothered to look up
you'd see he had a certain charm
the way some small dogs do.
But a painter could not have done much
with him: a single,
simple shape, no friend nearby
or anywhere in the sky
to act as a mirror,
just him, dim in the midst
of a larger dimness.
