It's interesting how much smoother and more stylized anime art styles have gotten over the last what, thirty years, right? I mean, looking at these caps, the Code Geass ones are obviously pretty, but don't the Gundam characters seem more realistic, in a way? Their faces are curvier and the eyes are smaller, with less stylized eyelashes. But then on the other hand it looks like shading has gotten more complex.
Well, it was the time when Japanese animation "flirted" with Western animation (see "Disney"). They were still working on developing their own style :3
What was really "different" with Japanese animation is that the "style" of the animation was totally different from the Western stuff-- They showed things at weird angles, used some special effects and point of views that were totally different from the "static" style of so-called "cartoons". When anime was introduced on Westerner TV it was a real shock because of this :3 ! At the time nobody cared about the big eyes or the big boobs and everyone was mesmerized by the movements and the rendering of explosions XD --And the stories was TOTALLY AWESOME.
