The problems with villain characters nowadays is that they are RARELY actually evil.
Sorry for busting in but, I have to agree with you there. It's not that I want flat "Mwahahahaha" villians but I want a bad guy that's...BAD! That's so evil that I shouldn't like him but I do. (Like Edmund from this fic I read online.)
Yes, exactly! Many authors are really focused on giving us that kind of villains with some traumatic past to explain their evil doings, or they rape evil characters by turning them into random psychos in love (see Akasha from Shikabane Hime-- W-WHAT A FAILURE.) or they try to be smart, and come with villains based on contrasts (see manga Kimbly from Fullmetal Alchemist, or also Schneizel from code geass-- 'The evil guy with manners'), but the results kinda stink to me :/
'That's so evil that I shouldn't like him but I do.' ..Exactly ;3;
Yeah, I guess it's because many girls (around here at least) go for that these days. They drool over the "he's not bad just misunderstood/traumatized" guys. It's a fantasy they have.
Personally I think evil is sexy. It stops being sexy when it's not evil. I don't shun sympathetic villians, I just prefer the former. They can be done really well.
Ahah, well, I'm not so extreme with my tastes for characters, but yeah, as much as it concerns villains I completely agree with you.
Looks like certain authors (or fans) like to think that these kind of characterization's devices would give deepth to a character or make them more realistic, but in my opinion they just "stain" them.
To make a few examples of other evil characters nicely done-- Scarface and Hannibal come to my mind :D What about you? Any villain that you like ^_^ ?
Yes, they made a movie too, but the story is somewhat lighter and there's no Yaoi (yes, there's yaoi XD Yuki is in love with the other protagonist, A CATHOLIC PRIEST, and manages to molest him lots of times XD)--
Ah, and the good point about the lenght of Monster is that the anime recaps the whole manga story from the beginning to the end :D

And the ED is one of the most disturbing things ever XD
If you happen to find it, give a red to MW by Osamu Tezuka-- It left me speechless with his villain protagonist (who's also bi, of course XD)
