The Three Faces of Who

Sep 06, 2006 07:08

Doctor Who, the character - more rightly refered to as simply The Doctor, has had ten actors playing him within accepted Doctor Who canon. But after detailing his inclusion into the Westphall Universe, it occurs to me that Doctor Who isn't merely one series - it has had three incarnations.

Actually, this is no revelation. While each of the three series follows continuity pretty much to the letter, most who fans and the BBC recognise the difference between the original run and the current series... with the canon Fox TV movie pilot intervening in between.

Yes, Who canon is confusing.

And I'm not sure how the Grid is going to look yet, but the stats are:

  • Doctor Who (1963-1989) - BBC
  • Doctor Who [pilot only] (1996) - Fox
  • Doctor Who (2005-????) - BBC

And owing to this post by
momsdinercodelj, it looks like we've got a legit connection between Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as I explain:

The Tenth Doctor says in "The Christmas Invasion" (while wearing a pair of pyjamas during his advenutre): "Very Arthur Dent. Now there was a nice guy." Which seems much more than Ten throwing off another pop culture reference.

Arthur Dent being the protagonist of Hitchhikers - who wakes up one morning to find his home and planet Earth scheduled for demolition. He spends most of his adventures in his... well, I said pyjamas. But really it's in reference to his bath robe.

possible update, hitchhikers, doctor who
