'walden' would be an eye opening book if thoreau wasnt such a child. what people do not know is that through the whole walden's pond thing his mom brought him food, as well as brought him clothes. it's truly eye opening to see and hear a person talk about that, but to know he had help from his ma..the whole thing just kinda dumb. talk to someone that has gone around the world hopping trains. or someone that is homeless, or someone who truly did what thoreau did but wasnt a kid about it. i was sad to know thoreau had help.
yea, i was sorta bummed when i realized people visited him all the time and he wasnt even that far from a town. But I dont think you can lose respect for someone because they dont soul-search the way youd choose to. Everyone has thier own atmosphere of where their mind can have space to think and thoreau chose his. the whole experience wasnt some competition to see who was the manliest or who had the best woodland survival skills, it was someone who wanted to share a side of the world with readers that some never seek to experience. perhaps he could have roughed it a little more, cooked all his own food, lived in compleate solitude. maybe someone will come around and do exactly that and write a book on it that inspires people and opens eyes, and when they do... i will respect them as well, not for their physical strength or skills in living in the wilderness, but rather for their drive to persue a life that would bring them contentment and their desire to share their ideas with the world...two things thoreau did.
