I'm pretty sure this can't be a conscious, informed decision on the part of orcs and wolves and lake monsters to do that. It's the Ring subtly putting a target on Frodo's back, like it did to Isildur
Yeah, that seems right to me, too.
but even the wings and fire whip are book canon,
There's such a long-standing debate over whether Balrogs have actual wings or it just looks like they have wings, that I no longer remember where I originally fell on that question.
Okay I had been meaning to come back and comment on your icon here but I had forgotten about the link, and now that I've clicked it, I totally love the Balrog Wing Debate. I think I wanna say the wings are always there, but they're insubstantial, made of smoke and fire, and not capable of flight.
But yeah anyway, those LotR icons of yours. What's your secret source? :)

I think I'm about there, too. I don't think Balrogs can fly, but beyond that, I do like the image of insubstantial shadowy wings that always accompany them.

Ha, no secret source, just 15+ years of collecting them whenever I come across them on LJ and rarely getting rid of icons. They should all be sharable, I think. I don't know where the Gandalf sign one comes from, actually -- I've never seen it attributed to a maker, just snagged it from another user who also didn't know where it had come from -- but "Boromir's imaginary phone" meme was iconified by _grayswandir_ and the Elrond facepalm is from a brilliant set that cleolinda had made from her m15m/Movies in 15 Minutes radioplay summaries of the LotR movies. Oh, and the text one ("All we have to decide") was from a large set of LotR quotes pegkerr had made (also a Jane Austen one IIRC). The others I think are all pro illustrations with iconmakers credited :)
Okay, I'm going to make this short and sweet, since I realize that I've lost momentum and the only way to get back on track here is to keep moving (and because I have to start work in a half hour

But mainly I'm just commenting to use my icon :)
