It always struck me how many losses Elrond had to bear, and that this one probably must have been the worst.

Yes, there are always some questions to which there are no answers. I'm sure that this separation was one of the most painful in his long life, but only one of the first of many in the life of this tragic hero.

Hard for any brother, but perhaps especially for one who lives on without the expectation of ever following.
Good contrast between his well-known mastery of lore and the limits of the knowable!

(I think you might want "renowned" rather than "renown"?)

Thank you! (also for pointing out that typo). This aspect of immortality/ rebirth in Aman versus mortal death in Tolkiens Universe occupied my mind quite a bit recently.
