a quiet moment among the merry

Lovely description of how this sort of song works. What's the time frame for this drabble? I'm thinking post-Battle of Five Armies, but then the Ranger reference makes me want to move it later, to Imladris or to visits in the Shire before his 111 birthday.

Yes, I was thinking post-Battle of the Five Armies when Bilbo has been back at Bag End long enough to realise what Rangers are and what they do, but I wanted the visual/aural reference to be the Dwarves singing at Bilbo's fire-side - that touch of melancholy that virtually every night's singing and drinking I've ever known reaches at some point of a night!

This has got that lovely sweet melancholy that is very Tolkien. I do like Bilbo humming along and then realising that he's heard the tune before...

Thanks! I had the John Tam tune on my brain so I had to use it somewhere - and it suits both Dwarves and Rangers! ;P
