Ooooo interesting interchange between them - Grima trying to assert himself with a joke and failing miserably.

I like this image very much: ...bare trees like iron sculptures puncturing the snow. Very stark - and very suitable for one so cold and calculating as Saruman.

Heheh, poor Gríma. In my headcanon anyway, it's also another (quite subtle) indication that he actually is somewhat in Saruman's good graces, because most people probably would have gotten a full-on death stare from Saruman for that joke.

Thank you, glad you liked that phrase! It kept shifting location in the drabble, but I was determined to use it somewhere.

ps - love the icon

I feel sorry for Grima - trying to jest and it falling so flat. Eventually he will no longer think of jests...

I like the image of Isengard if they had hung that one paper lantern, too!

Yes I daresay jests will be far from his mind by the end.

Ooh I hadn't gotten as far as actually picturing the lantern being hung on one of the trees in Isengard, what a cool image. And now that I look at it, my last paragraph seems to suggest in some way that the lantern should've stayed in Isengard, which was the farthest thing from my mind when I wrote it. I love it when others' comments give me totally new perspectives on my own words. =]

Those bare trees just beg for paper lanterns. Oh well, I guess my love of those is just the elf in me (or so my hubbie would say - LOL).

I hadn't even thought of that, though now with yours and Wombat's comments I wonder how that image did not immediately come to my mind.

Paper lanterns are awesome. I think Isengard should totally have some in the winter. I doubt Saruman agrees, but I almost want to make art of it.

Have you heard about the Chinese Sky Lanterns? They are larger versions of paper lanterns which are lighted and they float away. They are very, very kewl. Here's an avatar that features them. If you're interested, you're welcome to use it.

I hadn't heard of them, those are cool!

Thanks, I'd likely swipe the icon if I had a ton of icon space like paid accounts do, but with my 15 max I'm already constantly shoving out icons I like in favor of other icons I like..
