Interesting! It came out quite physical, certainly - perhaps because, not knowing who Strider is, all Bilbo has to go on is his appearance and his voice and the fact he smokes a pipe...

I'm glad it feels plausible; I thought for a bit that the canon dates wouldn't stretch to it, but there turned out to be enough wiggle room and a very palpable hint in that quote from the Strider chapter...
