It's easy to think of the Elves, with their incredibly long lives and perfect memories, as having unlimited access to their race's past and history; this is a lovely demonstration that even their access can be fragile, lost to catastrophe or the wearing away of the elements, as the book symbolises. And it makes perfect sense that Elrond the loremaster would be very cautious in caring for such a volume. Really nice!
