I love the scene in the film of Gandalf huddled on top of the tower, and the moth... and this drabble evokes it. Thanks for sharing :)

I'm glad it evoked it for you! I certainly found myself returning to the PJ visuals - they're fairly faithful to the text at that point, I think (though the moth's a more specific detail than JRRT gives). I did wonder if PJ had exaggerated the height of Orthanc, but then Gandalf describes it during the Council of Elrond as having "thousands of steps", which really must make it at least a thousand feet high...

This is very weighty, lots of substance. Great drabble.

Thank you! I wasn't sure I'd done much to expand the moment beyond the canon/the movie, so that's reassuring feedback...

I love Gandalf's thoughts as they unfold in this series (granted, I am reading it backwards, XD).

Gandalf's voice rings through very clearly here. Must have been a nervous moment - wondering whether Radagast would betray him too.

IIRC he admits in canon that at that point if it hadn't been for Radagast, and the fact that Saruman hadn't even tried to corrupt him, he would have been sunk. I'm glad you felt I got his voice.

Oh, yes, the title fits both Gandalf and Saruman here, as someone else has noted. And the images this evokes are wonderful. Excellent tension!

Thank you, Larner! Yes, Wombat spotted more in the title than I'd realised...
