This is a more human Saruman than we usually see. I like this version of him.

If only he'd stayed this way! Glad we see him more approachable--for now, at least.

Oooo, interesting viewpoint No longer was he a houseless wanderer in largely empty lands, but a lord in his own right. ...and the more e owned the more he felt the need to defend it.

Not only was he moved to defend what he had, he was moved also to seek to own and control more. Thanks, Kortirion.

At least he was still mostly wise in those days. Thanks, Linda.

Perhaps one day he would gather an army to himself. Brrr, that's ominous. And I like the idea of that drive to power and possession having its roots in a long-resented lack of land or home. Wonder if that's one of his reasons for later despising the Grey Wanderer, who is rootless by choice...

A good insight, Azalais. I wonder how he might have turned out if Cirion hadn't given him the tower?

A perfectly poised moment: past rootlessness, potential Grand Plans for the future, but in the here-and-now just quiet scholarship. That's both restful and very evocative.

Restful for now, at least. But we see what he came to in the coming drabbles.
