I like the idea of them getting a leaf a level - how neat!

It seemed like a good way to reward apprentices for each stage of their training, and for others to see how far they had progressed.

I see Estel learning from many different people - his father and brothers of course; but also from the other healers of Imladris and even travellers passing through.
