I can just see the children thinking they they'd rather duck today than eggs tomorrow!

Poor child. It's not an easy life for him.

Lucky ducks! :>)

No - I don't think they would have had an easy life - those trying to manage in a ravaged land with many of the men missing. But I think he would get a little fun sometimes - although what form this takes will depend on your next prompt!

He is Rohirrim - the horses come first... and the ducks and the cow.

Just like the Rohirrim to feed the horses first! A great glimpse of winter hardship.

It must have been a hardscrabble life after a war. Wonder how safe those ducks are...
I am enjoying these :)

Thank you. I haven't decided yet whether the ducks will survive the winter...

I'm guessing the ducks will make it through to Spring all right, but probably not more than two of the drakes. Perhaps the Éothéod keep some holiday in the month of Solmath, like unto our Imbolc/Candlemas, with a bright fire in a swept-and-garnished hearth, and a specially-good supper to cheer a hard-working boy ( ... )

There is, indeed, in my mind a mid-winter celebration for this lad and his siblings.

I totally agree with your comments about life on the farm in the winter as a child - I am writing very much from memory! The difference, for me, was that there were adults around to do heavy work and make sure I didn't do anything stupid. And, of course, there always was a good breakfast for me...
