Good old Pippin. They really all needed to find ways of keeping their spirits up on that dreary trudge southwards. I love the idea of Gandalf doing a tiny magic with the fire.

Pippin was the self-appointed jester, I think, seeking ever to help lighten the load of gloom from others, and particularly for Frodo and Merry. And I do think that Gandalf once in a while sought to add his own cheer as he could, if he felt it was safe enough or needed sufficiently.
