I doubt that either were counting coup that day--too serious a business in the end. And to think that the only ending needed that day was for a small ring of gold to be dropped into the fire....

Hmmm, I don't know - they seem to use the black humour to get them through the direness of those moments. But in a way, Legolas is looking back at all the times they have come through, precisely because this time it looks as if they won't. It's only because I know they will that I could bear to write it like that at all..
