That's almost unbearably poignant. I don't think I've read a better rendering of Aragorn's death and Arwen's grief. the numbness penetrating the City and face a mask of anguish, and her body somehow insubstantial...like a candle-shadow -- from the general to the particular, the city to the individual most directly affected; and that tells against Barahir's wish to give the fading Arwen serenity and closure. Maybe she did not go gentle into that good night after all.

Tragic and so very beautiful, anyway. Thank you!

No, maybe she didn't. "The tale of Aragorn and Arwen" is a very sombre and poignant part of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien seems to say that when Arwen was faced with the hardest test of all, she couldn't bear it. And there is also something fragile about the elves. They are immortal, but, as you put it in a drabble, "elves die so easily".
Thank you so much for your lovely and perceptive comment!

...like starlight on water, under the falling leaves.

There's a lovely falling cadence to that which perfectly suits the moment. As commentators upthread said, this is like a poem, in the way the rhythm and images so perfectly tell the story. Beautiful.

Thank you for your kind words. Arwen's fate is quite sad, but I think Tolkien was right not to sentimentalize it.
Thanks for reading!
