No, it wasn't enough in the end, but I would like to think that he loved his sons and had good moments with them, before things turned dark.

Lovely image of Denethor as the crucial link in the chain of the House of Mardil - I'm sure Denethor always felt responsible for holding the whole thing together; and, tragically, it was that overweening sense of responsibility that did for him, in the end.

The contrast between that image of happy harmony and the dark, dark place he finds himself in in the last lines is just so sad :-(

Yes, I agree. It was that sense of responsibility that undid him. But basically I think he was a good, if complicated man, who loved his sons but lived in evil times. I am really pleased you liked this - thanks for reading!
