Thank you. I realise that, although I have really enjoyed writing him throughout the Returnverse stories, I rarely use him as a POV character - I must try t do so again sometime.
I never thought about how awkward it must have been for Gimli to be on horseback. I don't recall any of Tolkien's dwarves riding on horseback, though there is no reason they couldn't have--the hobbits rode small ponies.
I can see them using ponies; small, sturdy, ponies. But riding behind Legolas, or any of the others, with no proper saddle or stirrups must have been very different - and less comfortable, I think.
It cannot have been the most comfortable of rides - nor feel all that secure. I would hope that for future journeys together either Gimli got a good stout pony, or Legolas got him a type of pillion saddle with stirrups to fit.

But I can see that riding an outsize horse without the proper equipment would be an uneasy experience.
