Their voices had been like those of gently woken elflings, drowsy with sleep.

That makes me sad - that the trees are fading in their own way. But as he remarks, there are many changes in life (paraphrased).

They are fading in their own way, but gently. This is an easier change for Rumil than if he felt the trees were worried to be alone, or angry but, yes, still sad in its way.
