Oh yes, this is lovely.

I had a small laugh over envisioning him using a fighting knife to sharpen a quill. It probably would do the task, but not with great ease. What an excellent gift from Gilraen.

The idea of one of the Noldor having such a blind spot when it comes to metal tools is hilarious. A letter would be a sign of appreciation of the gift, Glorfindel!

I I think it quite possible that he had a perfectly good penknife but was just using the other one as it was nearer to hand - and that this was a gift given maybe 17 or 18 years ago before she really new him that well!
