This is a nice glimpse into Faramir's thoughts and heart.
I was absolutely horrified at Peter Jackson's treatment of the hobbits in the Henneth Annun scene, whereas in the books they were treated respectfully, fed, got some rest, provisioned, and were able to clearly perceive Faramir's 'quality' and nobility.
This. I was so outraged! "Who the heck are you, Mr. Big-nose, and what have you done with noble, raven-haired Lord Faramir?!" The Rangers of Ithilien didn't know what hobbits were, but they did know at first sight that they were "not orcs", and they certainly did not kick poor old Gollum around like a football, nor did Faramir waver for one second in his vow that he would not touch the thing that betrayed his brother if he found it lying beside the road.
Awell, the coals are still red-hot under the ash of the years since that movie came out; they don't take very much stirring to blaze up. I was just turned 16 when I first read LotR in 1973, so as you can imagine, the Steward's second son made a lasting impression on me, and Movie!Faramir is wrong in just about every way he could be wrong.
But reasons to kick Peter Jackson go ever ever on. Don't even get me started about the lame and pitiful defense of Osgiliath. *wry Elven grin* Too much geek; I know; I know.
I must admit I like Tolkien's version but PJ had to create some drama at that point in the movie. At least he pulled Faramir's character back into line later.
This is lovely - "when he returned to Minas Tirith, he had difficulty sleeping without its sound." - and yes, the true, the kind and honorable noble Lord Faramir we've always loved, who knows how to treat guests.
