What a wonderful bonding for them; I hadn't thought about this sadness they had in common.

I'm not really sure what pushed me in this direction, but I'm pleased with the result. I think it was one more area of commonality between the Master of Imladris and the Chieftain's widow. Thanks for reading and commenting, I appreciate it!

They have both lost a spouse, haven't they?
Even if Celebrian is still alive.

Yes, even though Elrond has the hope of someday seeing his wife again, both of their spouses were torn from their sides by vicious attacks of the enemy. I think that gave the two of them a platform from which they could find commonality which would allow them to work in tandem to raise Aragorn to adulthood.

I do like this glimpse of a growing friendship - I'm sure such a friendship would have been good for them both.

I doubt they would have been able to raise Aragorn jointly as they did without having mutual respect and common ground between them as well. I hope Gilraen had some friends in Imladris. It would be a horribly empty life for her otherwise.

And a long friendship I hope it was for them.

Well, it lasted for her lifetime, of course, but as I recall, that wasn't as long as it should have been given the fact that she was of Isildur's blood and should have had the long life of the Dunedain.
