Title: Cold and Clear Author: Kortirion Character: Thorongil and Elf Rating: G Source: Pre-Ring War Disclaimer: Tolkien saw all the stars in his Middle-earth’s firmament, Kortirion simply marvels.
Thank you. I read 'The Science of Middle-earth', which proposed that elves' eyes have more receptors in them, hence their vision is clearer and sharper over far longer distances than ours, more like those of a bird of prey - just extrapolating from that. ;-)
Very nice scene! (And comes with matching disclaimer, too!) I'm glad the boat trip is not all misery. Hooded elf? Is that just because it's cold or is there about to be some kind of reveal?
I do love this idea - I wrote a story once in which someone thought of seeing half a sky of stars - but I hadn't thought of it applying to mortals in the eyes of the firstborn before.
Thank you! I think I was partly inspired by looking up and only seeing the major stars, because of light pollution, when I know that if I were somewhere 'darker' I'd see many more.
