The idea came from the third volume of the Earthsea trilogy. That features rafts, as far as I remember, but I thought if the Noldor came up with such a thing it would be a lot more elaborate!

That is lovely - if they are forever at sea then this is the perfect way for them to get some R&R at reasonable intervals.

Somehow that suggestion about Tuor having to keep on voyaging had stayed with me, despite it being only a footnote in canon, and so I had to provide some R&R for him!
