Aw, poor Maeglin not fitting in anywhere and finding Gondolin wasn't as he hoped and now he's stuck!

but I was trying to follow, trying to work out why things were meant to be funny.

I love the sense of dissociation that this conjures up.

I think Gondolin must have been quite the place for in-jokes! Salgant would probably not realize quite how much.
And that's not even taking into account that Nan Elmoth doesn't sound like the best place to cultivate one's sense of humour and of course Maeglin's would have suffered anyway from recent events.
