It was an ordinary Wednesday morning and Takasugi was amused. Yankumi would be absent for the rest of the week because of high fever and the class 3D had a substitute teacher. The young man, teacher trainee called Koba Junichi, stood in front of the class and looked like a nervous little animal.

“All right, everyone! Um, would you please take your math books and… and open it on the page twenty-eight.”

“That went almost well already! Keep trying, teacher,” Mochizuki shouted and everyone laughed when the teacher turned bright red.

Takasugi leaned his chin against his hand with a lopsided smile.

This week was going to be fun.

Already before lunch break he was convinced that it wouldn’t be just fun. No, the week with Koba-sensei would be hilarious.

Koba-sensei wasn’t a bad teacher at all, he was just young and inexperienced. At the same time he was friendly and treated them well. He didn’t seem to consider them as delinquents and potential criminals from the very first moment like many other teachers did. Sure, he wasn’t even nearly as cool as Yankumi was but he was nice enough.

Which, however, didn’t stop the class from teasing him. Nobody wanted to be really mean towards him; it was simply entertaining to make fun of the man a bit.

Takasugi soon noticed something even funnier: every time he met Koba-sensei’s eyes the man startled and looked quickly away, clearly flustered and confused.

The boy grinned and decided to see what would happen if he actually winked at the poor teacher the next time their eyes met.

The Thursday afternoon was boring. Takasugi rocked back and forth on his chair and stared at the blackboard in front of which Koba-sensei was trying to get his voice audible over the noisy class.

Takasugi wasn’t interested in physics at all but he rather liked Koba-sensei’s voice. For once his voice was strong and clear, and the tone of his speech was eager. It was clear that he liked his subject and enjoyed talking about it, no matter if anyone was listening to him or not.

“So, considering all these things, how much is the mass of the car? Takasugi?”

Not only his voice but his face was quite okay too, Takasugi thought absentmindedly and let his gaze wander over the man’s features. He was average height and had a well-built body, and his hands looked very nice, strong and soft at the same time.

“Takasugi?” the teacher repeated his question and it was Takasugi’s turn to feel shivers running up his spine.

What the hell had he been thinking about?

“Takasugi! Takasugi come back on this very second!”

You wish, Takasugi thought bitterly, pushed his hands deeper in his pockets and stomped along the empty corridors, away from the English lesson and the headmaster. He had no intention to stay in the school after such ridiculous accuses.

He was just about to kick the main door open when he heard the noise of running steps and someone grabbed his arm.

“You can’t go home yet.”

“You think you can stop me?” Takasugi spit out and tried to yank his arm free but Koba-sensei was quicker and moved between Takasugi and the door.

“You can’t go yet. The headmaster wants to talk with you.”

Takasugi closed his eyes and took a deep shaking breath. He was completely fed up with all the teachers on the earth. (Although in his mind he quietly admitted that he rather wished Yankumi had been at school now. She would probably have helped him.)

“The fuck he wants to talk with me. I’m not going to stay in a place where people come out of the blue to claim that I’m a shoplifter,” he growled and tried to get rid of the stubborn teacher. He twisted his arm wanting to get away from Koba-sensei’s grip and pushed the man against the wall so that he groaned in pain.

The look in Koba-sensei’s eyes surprised Takasugi. He had expected the man to be scared. Instead, Takasugi met a pair of dark eyes and a steady gaze without the slightest hint of fright.

Suddenly, Takasugi was very aware of how hard the both of them were breathing and how warm Koba-sensei’s fingers were around his wrist. They were close enough that Takasugi could feel the heat radiating from the man and he shivered when he caught himself of staring at Koba-sensei’s lips.

“Let me go!” Takasugi hissed in confused anger and took a step back.

“I won’t! Listen to me,” Koba-sensei shouted and looked into Takasugi’s eyes, “I’m not going to let you leave. I know you haven’t done anything!”

“How do you know?” Takasugi snorted, “No one has even asked me yet if I did it or not.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you! They already found the culprit. The kid wasn’t even from our school. The headmaster of the kid’s school phoned us right after Sawatari-sensei had left the teacher common room.”

Takasugi froze and looked at Koba-sensei.

“Really?”

“Really.”

Sure, it was nice to know that the real culprit had been found but it was also a fact that Sawatari had totally had the balls to accuse him of the crime without any real proof.

“I’m going anyway.”

“Don’t go,” Koba-sensei asked and Takasugi bit his lip at the mental images that suddenly flashed in his mind.

Damn, Takasugi thought, why did the man have to look and sound like that? Asking him to stay as if they were talking about a completely different matter.

“Takasugi…”

That was enough. Takasugi took a step that closed the short distance between them, and furiously pressed his mouth on the man’s lips. Koba-sensei made a shocked noise but Takasugi didn’t let him go and kept kissing him until he got a shy answer.

“I didn’t quite expect you to do that,” Koba-sensei said in a husky voice when Takasugi finally took a step back.

“Me neither,” the boy murmured and looked away embarrassedly.

“Not that I complain,” the teacher added sheepishly and Takasugi raised his eyebrows.

“Wasn’t that pretty much against all the moral and ethical rules of teachers?” he asked, totally ignoring the fact that it had been himself who had kissed Koba-sensei first.

“I’m not a teacher yet. Just a trainee,” the man chuckled and shrugged, “Besides, I’m hardly four years older than you.”

Takasugi glanced at Koba-sensei and thought about it a while. Koba-sensei really had a point there.

“Fine. I’ll come with you and correct the misunderstanding. If-” he added when the corners of Koba-sensei’s mouth started to rise, “if I get a kiss. From you. Now.”

“Anytime,” Koba-sensei chuckled.

Takasugi didn’t admit he had a crush on his teacher. No, it would have been too weird, and too soon as well. But he had feelings towards the man. Sure, Koba-sensei was a teacher but it wasn’t a big problem after all. The odds were he would never teach Takasugi’s class anymore and Koba-sensei being just a teacher wasn’t even half as bad as being Takasugi’s teacher. (Koba-sensei laughed at Takasugi when he said that but the boy didn’t care.)

“My next practical training period will start next week in Hokkaido,” Koba-sensei said on Friday evening after school, “I’ll move there for half a year.”

Takasugi frowned when he heard Koba-sensei’s words; they made his heart ache strangely and he didn’t really like the feeling.

“Here. It’s my mail address. I’ll come back in late March. If you are still interested by then… well, I’ll answer you anytime.”

The boy took the piece of paper that Koba-sensei gave him, and smiled a bit.

“I hope you get a nice class,” he said and scratched his neck embarrassedly, “and if they’re horrible…”

“Then what?” Koba-sensei asked curiously.

“Just treat them like you treated us and you’ll be okay,” Takasugi said quickly, not daring to look at the man into the eyes.

Koba-sensei raised his eyebrows and smiled in a surprised way.

“Thanks, Takasugi. You’re quite okay too.”

“Shut up,” Takasugi murmured but he couldn’t help the pleased smile that lighted up his face.
