It’s been a while since Maya has seen Tetsuya, and it’s almost like nothing has changed. Tetsuya’s hair is shorter than the last time and he looks a bit older, of course, but otherwise he looks exactly the same. Almost.

The thing is, Maya has never seen Tetsuya looking so nerve-wrecked before. He sits on the other side of the café table and stares at his cup of coffee as if he has never seen one before. His face is pale and there are deep shadows under his eyes and if Maya didn’t know better he’d think Tetsuya has never slept either.

Maya takes a sip from his cup, wondering if something’s really wrong and if he should just ask straight away.

“I was rather surprised when you called me,” he then says, “How long are you staying in Tokyo?”

“Just a few days,” Tetsuya answers and makes a vague gesture towards the briefcase next to his chair. “I’ll need to attend some business meetings; already had one yesterday and another today, and the last two will be tomorrow.”

Maya nods and finally decides to ask the question that’s been burning his mind from the first moment he saw Tetsuya at the café.

“Uh, sorry for taking this up so suddenly but… what’s wrong? You look horrible, to be honest.”

For a few seconds Tetsuya looks like he’s seriously feeling sick but then he lets out a deep sigh.

“I haven’t slept in two nights.”

“Not at all?”

“Two hours last night, not a minute on the night before.”

“Even though you have all those meetings! Man, weren’t you ever taught how to take care of yourself?” Maya asks with a frown but Tetsuya shakes his head and looks even more tired with a flash of despair in his look.

“It has nothing to do with work,” he says and fiddles with the other sleeve of his black suit, shifting on his place. “So, um. I guess you haven’t heard the news then.”

“Nope,” Maya agrees and waits patiently until Tetsuya gets the words out.

“I’m… I'm going to be a father.”

Maya can almost see the words hanging in the air between them and for a second he fights between the urge to laugh and sigh at the same time. He had seriously been waiting for something much worse; something sad or shocking. Sure, Tetsuya’s news is shocking but only in the good way.

“But that’s great news! Man, congratulations!” he says and smiles widely, “When’s the due date?”

“In September,” Tetsuya says and seems to wince at the sheer thought, “Just… I’m not ready. I seriously am not ready for this, I… Nozomi and I haven’t even been married for a year yet and I- I don’t even know how to be a father and it’s just, that’s just too much too fast!”

“Relax,” Maya chuckles and can’t help a grin when he pats Tetsuya’s palms like a proper family life senpai, “It feels like that before the baby is born and it’s not easy later either but you can do it. I’m sure you’ll be an awesome dad for the baby!”

“But it’s not a baby we’re talking about here,” Tetsuya says in a shaky voice, and this time his eyes reflect real panic.

“Huh? Didn’t we just… Then what--”

“It’s not about a baby,” Tetsuya repeats, “It’s the babies we’re talking about. Not one. Two.”

This time Maya actually laughs aloud.

“Just two,” he gasps between his laughter, “You sounded like there were going to be a whole dozen of them or something!”

“It’s not funny!” Tetsuya snaps and Maya raises his hands apologetically.

“Sorry, sorry. Seriously, it’s amazing! Double congrats, and so.”

Tetsuya looks several stages more relaxed now that he’s gotten the news out and the both of them concentrate on their coffees, the atmosphere notably lighter than earlier.

“Is that why you haven’t slept,” Maya asks after a while and Tetsuya nods.

“Nozomi told me the news two days ago,” he says and for the first time there’s something like disbelieving awe in his expression before he really smiles.

“I don’t know what I should think about it,” Tetsuya admits and looks down at his cup, “I’ve felt like this ever since she told me. On one moment it’s the best thing in my life ever, and on the next moment it’s the most horrifying thing I’ve ever heard.”

“I know,” Maya says and smiles gently, remembering very well how he had felt in the same situation. “I guess you already know this but you can always ask me if there’s anything you want to know. You can learn from my mistakes and so on. Right?”

“As if I’d ever ask you for advice,” Tetsuya chuckles and now he finally looks like himself, like he hasn’t changed at all.

“Thank you,” he adds half an hour later, when they have finished their coffees and stand outside the café, preparing to go separate ways again. Maya shakes his head and smiles.

“Just keep me updated,” he just asks and Tetsuya promises he will.
