mairinathaira and her distaste for one author's stance on fanfiction. But I think it touches on a lot of common issues for fanworks, so I thought it'd be helpful to re-post my comments for my flist, just for FYI purposes

I wouldn't say I have a huge distaste for authors like Anne Rice, but rather it leaves me not wanting to read it because after I read it, what's the point? I don't want to be left with an urge to write a fanfic when I'm not allowed to, you know?
I'm all for those author's who want to protect their work, but at the same time . . . bleeeeh XD

Eh, I think authors should know how to pick and choose their battles. Ethics and integrity aside, it's about pragmatics. If they're smart, they can make it very profitable for them to culture a fanbase.
