Punching Holden Caufield: An Essay

Feb 04, 2008 22:54

Here is my Catcher in the Rye essay for AP English. The entire thing, apart from the first paragraph and the first two sentences of the second, was frantically written during last period today (the absolute last deadline to turn it in. late.), hence the rushed ending.

There are exactly 281 words on the first page of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in ( Read more... )

Charlotte, I love how honest you are! Even if I hate a book, if I have to write an essay on it, I write it as if I like it. That's stupid, but I always worry that the professor might like it, and if they're biased and not fair, then I'd like to play to their good side.

Then again, they may not like the book/essay/movie/whatever and may be one of those people who are "testing" the class, without say so, on whether they catch the things he/she doesn't like. Or whether someone gives a different viewpoint. Ugh, school is so complicated.

I don't get why people like Holden either. I worry too much about my future, in general, so I've never really had a conversation like he (and you) have had. But I related (somewhat) to him breaking down. And I think that sucks because I'd rather not relate to him at all!

Most of all, I couldn't stand his arrogance. So even when there were moments when I should have felt a little something for him, I just couldn't. Ugh. That kid, I swear. I'm so glad he's fictional.

Well...I kind of had to be honest, since my teacher has had to listen to me saying "I HATE THIS FUCKING BOOK. I WANT TO PUNCH HOLDEN CAUFIELD RIGHT IN HIS ARROGANT FACE." very loudly since day 1. *g*

There are things later in the book that I had viewpoints etc on, but the essay only had to be 500 words and I had only an hour.

Most of all, I couldn't stand his arrogance. So even when there were moments when I should have felt a little something for him, I just couldn't. Ugh. That kid, I swear. I'm so glad he's fictional.

*hi 5s* Man, I wish that I was going to the concerts, just so I could give you a hug for saying that. Because that is exactly what I have been thinking this whole unit. I'm glad he's fictional, but that pisses me off 'cause you can't punch fictional people.

LMAO

Oh, so NOW you want to hug me? Not before? Just because I can't stand a fictional person? Oh my. I feel so loved.

;-)

But yeah, if you kept saying you didn't like him, it would be weird to praise the book in your actual essay.
