Hakuouki Artbook List

Jun 24, 2012 05:05

List of all official art books released.
Stars = my personal rating of the ones I own, from ★★★★★(5) to ☆☆☆☆☆(0).

Gengashuu (Original Art Collection) - Published by Hifumi Shobo.

1. Hakuoki Gengashuu 【薄桜鬼 原画集】
★★★★★
Collection of all CGs from the first Hakuoki game and some promotional art. For CGs there are also linearts and quotes from the scene it's used.

2. Hakuoki Zuisouroku Gengashuu 【薄桜鬼 随想録 原画集】
★★★★★
Collection of all CGs from Hakuoki Zuisouroku game and some promotional art. For CGs there are also linearts and quotes from the scene it's used.
(The 6 new event CGs in PSP version, since they're made later, aren't included here.)

3. Hakuoki Reimeiroku Gengashuu 【薄桜鬼 黎明録 原画集】
★★★★★
Collection of all CGs from Hakuoki Reimeiroku game and some promotional art. For CGs there are also linearts and quotes from the scene it's used.
(The new event CGs in PSP and PS3 version, since they're made later, aren't included here.)

4. Hakuoki Gengashuu "Tsuisou Emaki" 【薄桜鬼 原画集 追想絵巻】
★★★★☆ if you enjoy chibi character pics.
★★☆☆☆ if you don't. About 40% of this book are chibi characters drawn by Sakura Takuto.
Collection of CGs from Yuugiroku game and most of (Otomate said it's all, which isn't true) the promotional arts not included in previous 3 books.
What's included:
2010 calendar (the Sengoku style costumes), new CGs in Zuisouroku PSP game, all CGs in Yuugiroku game, cover arts of games ported to PSP and DS, re-colored version of illustration for Dengeki novel, chibi character pics in Dengeki magazine, chibi chracter pics in Otomate Mobile website.
What's NOT included:
New CGs in Reimeiroku PSP game, DVD cover arts, 2 Sylph magazine covers (Hijikata half-Rasetsu, Hijikata+Saitou), Saitou in Japan Girl Festival, and Yamazaki in Otomate Mobile website. All of these are Kazuki Yone arts I was looking forward to, so I was quite disappointed.

5. Hakuoki Gengashuu "Tsuisou Emaki 2" 【薄桜鬼 原画集 追想絵巻2】
Whatever's not included in the "Official Collection".
Includes 2012 calendar, Reimeiroku additional CGs, Yuugiroku 2 CGs and promo art, etc.
The only ones by Kazuki Yone are the 6 CGs & 2 coverarts in Reimeiroku PSP. Others are mimics by the crappy copycat who doesn't deserve to have her name revealed. (←Said by Otomate & Idea Factory, not me. Idea Factory hides her name so they can pass her stuff as Kazuki Yone's. Complaints? Take it to Idea Factory.)

Mook (Magazine-styled Book) - Published by Dengeki Girl's Style (Ascii Media Works).

1. Hakuoki Koushiki Illustration "Hyakka Ryouran" 【百花繚乱】
★★☆☆☆ if you enjoy character settings and novels.
☆☆☆☆☆ if you don't. It's got less than half of the artworks compared to Hifumi's art book.
Collection of arts and CGs from the first game, character settings, game guide, and official short novel.
It was a nice book back in 2009 when it;s first published. But now there's barely any reason to buy it. Character settings? The official settings book covered most of them. Novels? They're in the Hakuoki game (PSP, DS, and PS3 version) The only things exclusive were the novel illustrations (in 5-color version, which is cool). But now the full-color version is in "Tsuisou Emaki" and Official Collection, so it's not exclusive anymore.

2. Hakuoki Koushiki Monogatari Emaki "Ouka Fuujin" 【桜花風塵】
★★☆☆☆ if you enjoy character settings, novels, and interview.
☆☆☆☆☆ if you don't. The CGs got shrank so much that even the quality on-screen is better.
Collection of promotional arts and CGs from Zuisouroku game, official short novel, drama CD introduction, and interview with the producer and director.
It was a nice book back in 2010 when it's first published. But now... (same as above).
Novels in this book (6 main characters and 4 pairs) are included in Hakuoki DS and Hakuoki PS3 DLC.

3. Monthly Hakuoki (DGS Magazine Special Edition) 【月刊薄桜鬼】
★★★★☆
One per character. Set includes a "magazine", a shitajiki, and 2 cellphone straps (one metal and one PVC).
The magazine includes collection of CGs and arts of the character (spanning from the first Hakuoki game to Reimeiroku), history chart, and interview.
Since this series was published as "magazine", they are out of print now.

4. Hakuoki Official Collection 【薄桜鬼 公式大全集】
★★★★★
Set of 2 books that covers almost every Hakuoki CG and artwork up to 2012 Spring. Book one includes artworks from game cover art, merchandise, magazine, and even official blog. Book two includes character sprites, background, and in-game CGs.
Unlike the Official Settings above, this book set is an art collection, and doesn't have much description, setting, nor interviews.
What's included:
* Everything in #1~#4 above, without description and maybe smaller (2~3 CG per page).
* Game cover arts up to Reimeiroku DS.
* Monthly Hakuoki cover arts.
* Merchandise artworks of Chibi character.
* Magazine arts.
* Short novels (and the illustrations for them) from Dengeki magazines.
* Arts and short novels/talks in Otomate official blog, including chibi arts and Kazuki Yone's sexy April Fool dakimakura Okita & Saitou pics. So there's no need to buy Otomate Maniax Vol1~3 just for Hakuoki. XD
What's NOT included:
* Reimeiroku Nagorigusa cover art and new CGs.
* DVD cover arts of Hakuoki, Hekketsuroku (season 2), Sekkaroku (OVA), and Reimeiroku (season 3)
* 2 Sylph magazine covers (Hijikata half-Rasetsu, Hijikata+Saitou).
* Anime Hakuouki and Sekkaroku key visuals.
(The latter three can be found in anime fanbooks.)

Note: This 2-book set is out of print, and impossible to find at original price. It's not likely to be reprinted, because Dengeki prefers releasing artbooks on Kindle now. So if you like it, just grab it at a price acceptable.

5. Hakuoki 2013 Urakata (DGS Magazine Special Edition 2013) 【薄桜鬼2013裏語】
★★☆☆☆
Vol1 is Takasugi & Harada. Vol2 is Katsura & Saitou. Vol3 is Okada & Okita. Vol4 is Glover & Heisuke. Set includes a "magazine", a drama cd of Urakata character, and a clear charm of Hakuouki SSL character.
Flat out game promo for Urakata & SSL. Lacks the depth (in character backgrounds) of Monthly Hakuouki 2012.

6. Urakata Hakuouki Official Fanbook
Game CG, character setting, interview, and game guide.

Mook - Published by B's-Log (Enterbrain).

Hakuoki Official Settings "Tsuisouroku" 【薄桜鬼 追想録 公式設定集】
★★★★★ if you enjoy background setting.
★★★☆☆ if you don't. It's packed with information, so it's packed with small pics. Check the sample pages to see if you like it.
Interviews, detailed character settings, all character expressions (including unused ones), description of all CGs in the first game, and background CGs with description of important locations. Most informative Hakuoki book ever.

Studio DEEN Production Art Note - by Studio DEEN.

1. Hakuouki Sketches 【画稿録】
★★★☆☆
Season 1 character sketches, staff interview, and season 2 opening storyboard. What's inside the book.
The storyboard and interview are interesting and exclusive.
It's a thin booklet (20 pages) only released in Comiket 78 (2010/8/10~12). So it's like a doujinshi made by the original staff. The full set also includes a beautiful Reimeiroku clear folder.

2. Studio DEEN Production Art Note 001 - Hakuouki
Artworks of opening and ending sequence of anime Hakuouki, Hakuouki Hekketsuroku (season 2), and Hakuouki Reimeiroku (season 3). Also includes new artwork by Nakajima Atsuko (anime character design), and an interview with Oobari Masami (storyboard).
A4 size. 56 pages in monochrome and partly full color. Released in Comiket 83 (2012/12/29~31).

3. Studio DEEN Production Art Note 006 - Gekijouban Hakuouki Kyoto Ranbu 【劇場版 薄桜鬼 第一章 京都乱舞】
Artworks of the first movie.
A4 size. 100 pages in full color. Released in Comiket 85 (2013/12/29~31).

Note:
1) These are all convention exclusive, like a doujinshi, instead of a normal book with ISBN. No bookstores online or offline will sell these. The only way to get them is convention, auction, or secondhand store, which will of course charge a lot more than its original price.
2) Contents in Studio Deen's books belong to Studio Deen, and won't be conveniently included in other books.
Nice inexpensive anime artbooks are published by AMW, which use contents of AMW's own magazines (Dengeki & Sylph). AMW doesn't need to spend extra bucks in buying more from Studio Deen.

Anime Mook - Published by Sylph or Dengeki (Ascii Media Works)

1. TV Anime Hakuoki Season 1 Fanbook "Kyoto Zansho" 【京都残照】
2. TV Anime Hakuoki Hekketsuroku Fanbook "Shungetsu Sanka" 【春月散華】
3. TV Anime Hakuoki Sekkaroku Official Visual Guide
★★★★★
Magazine art, seiyuu interview, episode introduction, character settings, background settings, line art, opening sequence storyboard, and staff interview. Very informative if you enjoy anime art.

4. TV Anime Hakuoki Season 1 Settings and Sketches【第一期 設定絵巻】
Collection of character & background sketches. A4 size. 64 pages.
The full set includes the book and a furoshiki (in pink or asagi-iro). It's Dengekiya exclusive, and sold out. So the price now is crazy.

5. Hakuoki Reimeiroku Anime Fanbook "Shokou Senretsu" 「薄桜鬼 黎明録」アニメファンブック【曙光鮮烈】
★★★★★
Magazine art, seiyuu interview, episode introduction, character settings, background settings, line art, opening sequence storyboard, and staff interview. Very informative if you enjoy anime art.
This book also includes a drama CD of two 20-minute episodes.
And most importantly, it has the DVD limited edition cover arts by Kazuki Yone!! From Hakuoki, Hekketsuroku (season 2), to Sekkaroku (OVA). Those weren't in any other artbooks. Not even in the "Official Collection"! Some are 2 in a page. But still, this is the best you can get without spending big bucks on the limited DVDs.
Sample pages. I'm extremely satisified with this one. :D

Travel Guide - Published by Rurubu (JTB Publishing)

★★★★★
Rurubu Hakuouki - Travel guide for Bakumatsu-related places in Kyoto, Hino, Aizu, and Hakodate.
It's so good that I must write a book review for it . :)

Official Poster Collection - Published by Hifumi Shobo.

1. Otomate Still Collection (Vol. 1~13)
21x17cm mini poster with glossy photo effect. Each pack contains random 5 (out of 40) illustrations. Click on the pics above for the list of artworks.
Vol4, Vol8, and Vol12 are all Hakuoki. Others are mixture of several Otomate games.

2. Otomate Still Collection Premium (Vol. 1~10)
B5 size plastic shitajiki. Each pack of Vol.1~4 contains random 2 (out of 8) shitajiki. Vol.5~10 are random 2 out of 24. Click on the pics above for the list of artworks. Vol6 & Vol10 are all Hakuoki, Vol7 & Vol9 are all Amnesia, and Vol8 is all Norn9. Others are mixture of several Otomate games.

These are ALL the published art collections up to date (2014 January).
CD Books are listed as CD Drama, since the CD is the cake while the book is the cherry on top.

Other "artbooks" you may have seen on eBay but not listed here... are either 16-page magazine furoku (promo booklet), or bootleg.
Promo booklets aren't really worth more than $10. It's mainly information which were new back then, but are easy to find on internet now.
As for bootleg, download pics from Zerochan and print it out with your home printer would give you the same quality.

Similar art books that aren't Hakuoki. Don't let those eBay sellers fool you. :p

1. Kazuki Yone Artbook "Zanka"
Kazuki Yone's personal art collection. Includes arts from Hiiro no Kakera, Hanaoni (novel), and other games before 2008.

2. Otomate Art Gallery BAROCCO Vol.1

3. Kazuki Yone Fukusei Genga Bako "AVARUS" (box of original art replica)
