Honorifics in Hakuoki
Hakuouki trivia. :D
Commonly seen honorifics, from polite to informal:
-dono > -san > -kun > -chan or not using honorifics
Generally speaking: "San" is used when speaking to those of senior (or the same) status.
"Kun" is used when speaking to those of junior status, or among young men. "Chan" is to girls & children. "Dono" is used when speaking to someone with high social status, and isn't used nowadays.
About "status". First it's decided by rank. If both on the same rank, then it's decided by age.
Exceptions apply when the addresee doesn't mind. For example, Heisuke happily tells everyone to just call him "Heisuke".

Note:
1.In the drama CD "Shutsujin Zenya", Hijikata addressed almost everyone as "[family name]+kun", including Souji (Okita-kun)! I haven't heard this in the games or other dramas. Since this is one of the first batch of drama CDs, perhaps it's because their honorifics weren't decided yet. Or maybe he calls them "kun" in front of other soldiers.
2. Souji called Saitou "Saitou-kun" in several drama CDs and in the Hakuoki game, but "Hajime-kun" in Zuisouroku, Reimeiroku, and other drama CDs. I don't understand his standard. XD
Omake: About "Sannan" Keisuke
Whether his family name was pronounced "Yamanami" or "Sannan" is debatable. (Again this is totally ignored in English wiki! XD) There are evidences that support "Sannan":
1. Soldiers called him "Yamanami-sensei", while peer called him "Sannan".
2. More importantly, he sometimes sign his name as "三男" or "三南", which can only be pronounced as "Sannan". Since Nagakura didn't label how to pronounce the names in his memoirs, and no one in Sendai (Sannan's home domain) uses this family name now, this remains a mystery.
