I can relate. When I do, people freak. They can't handle someone who is anxious and/or depressed. They don't know how to be around someone who doesn't equate to their standards of "normal". Actually, I think it's more than that; depressed people remind others of their own issues. They'd rather be around those who are happy, bubbly, etc... it's what seems to be expected as "normal" behavior. If you don't conform to that, you're shunned. That's been my experience, at least. Your mileage may vary. I'd love to be happy all the time, but it's not realistic.
But, to function "out there", I do what is expected... I put on the "happy mask".

Good question. I haven't found an answer for it within myself yet.
