JAEJOONG
I probably shouldn’t have pushed her too far earlier. I smiled as I remembered the events of this morning and seeing Amber go through that. It was amusing, but at the same time I’d have to deal with the result of having tortured her. Totally worth it, though.
Before going directly to a bar Amber wanted to stop by her house first to change. I told her it was unlikely of her to suddenly care about her appearance. She remained quiet as we made our way to her street. She was in one of her moods and I wasn’t going to pry.
Now, here I was in her room of gayness, waiting as she finished cleaning herself up in the bathroom. I took my cellphone out from my back pocket and flopped on Amber’s bed, ruining it from its order. Turning to face the ceiling, I raised my cellphone a few inches away from my face and scrolled through my contacts list thinking of who else to invite.
I have tons of friends but not all of them are worth going to bars with. Some don’t drink, some are too busy and some just don’t matter.
I pressed on the down button, continuing to scan through the names of registered numbers on my phone when I came across Changmin’s number. He was saved in my phone under the name of James, just ‘cause I was that chicken to even have his actual name in my phone.
Call him or text him? Why would I do that? What the hell would I say? I didn’t want to be that person in his life. I was a part of his life because he made me part of it and certainly not for becoming someone that calls him 24/7 asking where he is and what he’s doing. That’s what his blonde, picture perfect, editor girlfriend is for.
He must be stupid. I mean, to give me all of that information about his girlfriend and trust me enough to not rat him out? What was he thinking? Does he really think I wouldn’t find a way to tell her that I was sleeping with Changmin and that I was also being paid to do so?
So many things about what was going on were confusing me and it would be nice to forget about everything even for just one night. Real life can wait. It isn’t going anywhere.
“Don’t laugh.” I heard Amber’s voice by the foot of the bed where her bathroom was. I moved up halfway and almost fell back over when I saw her.
She was Amber only she looked like she was possessed by some sort of Demon. A very girly demon. First of all, her bangs were swept and clipped to the side revealing her small, almond shaped eyes and the eyebrows I never thought she had. In exchange for her usual loose shirts and jeans she wore a red V-neck shirt that flowed freely from her upper body, the sleeves high enough to reveal her slender arms and below she wore her tight black pants, the pair that I never saw her wear, instead wasted in the back of her closet. She wasn’t completely girly, but I no longer could mistake her for a boy and I doubt anyone else would.
“Oh my God.” I breathed. “Where’s Amber?”
“Funny.”
“Seriously, though. What is going on?”
Amber walked to her dresser where she kept her brushes and accessories, a huge mirror attached to it. She picked up a few oversized necklaces and donned the ones she thought went well with her outfit. “I just think I want a little bit of a change. You know, mix things up a little.”
“And they weren’t mixed up already?”
“It’s just for one night, Jae. Don’t get too excited.”
“Don’t flatter yourself.” I rolled my eyes as she laughed.
Amber opened a tube of what seemed to be lipstick and slid it across her bottom lip.
“Lipstick? Oh my God. This is so weird.”
“I am a girl, you know!” She said as she pressed her lips together.
“Since when, homo?” I rolled off her bed and walked to where she was. “I didn’t even know you had clips like these.”
“It’s a fucking bobby pin. Your dad probably has clips like these.”
“My dad isn’t a lesbian.”
“You can never tell.”
“Oh!” I crossed my arms over my chest as I watch Amber apply eyeliner on. “I get it. Yoochun turned you straight.”
“Please.”
“Un-fucking-believable. I always thought you would go straight for me.”
“I am not straight for anyone.”
“’Cept Yoochun, yeah I know.” I nodded, forcing myself to keep a straight face.
“This night was arranged so that I could forget Yoochun. Not talk about him more.”
“I know, I know. But this is just too easy.”
Amber rolled her eyes and faced the mirror again.
“Alright, alright. I’ll stop. I’m sorry.” I patted her shoulder. “Have you talked to him? You know, ever since that night?”
“Yeah right.” Amber chuckled. “There is no way. Me plus confrontation equals failure. You should know this.”
“What are you talking about? You’re the best confrontationer there is. If there was a profession based on confronting you’d be the best confrontationist in the business.”
“This is different. He isn’t some guy. This is Yoochun. He’s one of my bestfriends. And this whole fucking thing is ridiculous. I mean, how uncomfortable was it earlier when we ran into him?”
“I’d give it a 5...out of 3.”
“Yeah,” Amber shoved me causing me to stumble backwards. “And thanks a lot for making things less awkward, eh!”
“Enough with the physical abuse. And I did say I was sorry.” I smiled. “This is gonna blow over before you know it.”
“You think so?”
I’ve never seen Amber so distraught and unsure in the duration of our friendship. It kind of worried me a bit because it made me realize that even the strong ones fall.
8:00 pm
The bar we chose to go to was, as we expected, packed with people rubbing up against one another. People filled the tables, the dance floor, the bar itself. It was annoying, but we both needed this. The sound of the music filled the entire club, the bass causing the floor to vibrate slightly. As soon as we struggled to enter the ill lit space we started to sweat.
A table was open despite the full crowd and we grabbed it with ease, squeezing our way and setting our things down. Now that Amber looked different eyes of men directed at her and I felt as if it were my duty to make sure she doesn’t fall into any of their filthy hands.
With much effort we finally got the attention of one of the waiters and ordered a pitcher of one of their special mixed drinks. If you’re going to drink then you better do it right.
“This is good!” Amber shouted to me amidst the noise of the crowd and the music, struggling for conversation.
“Every once in a while, yeah. It’s pretty hot, though!”
“You won’t notice that once you’re drowning in alcohol!”
“So true!”
A few minutes later our pitcher arrived along with a plate of nachos and two shot glasses. It was like ice cold heaven in a humungous pitcher for an affordable price. I took a bite of the nachos before lining our glasses up and pouring the bluish alcohol mixture into each glass. As I set the pitcher down and passed one of the glasses to Amber, I knew that this was going to be one of the nights that will make our heads ache in the morning.
“To reckless, impulsive decisions!” I shouted as we both held our shot glasses in mid air.
“Cheers!”
We clinked our glasses against one another and consumed the contents in one go. The sweet, slightly bitter liquid started out cold on my tongue but ended up burning its way down my throat.
“That was way stronger than I expected!” I shouted at Amber who was already pouring our glasses with more.
“Just what the doctor ordered!” Amber replied.
It was about 6 or 7 shots in when we both started feeling wobbly. The pitcher was half empty but the crowd was getting thicker and thicker. People went in and out and their faces started to become blurry as the alcohol continued to pour and the night deepened.
We would allow our bodies to sway to the music as we began to feel lightheaded and everything started to seem funny.
“You do know,” Amber started, her words slurring just a bit. “that you’re one lucky son of a bitch.”
“I am?” I chuckled.
“You have this hot guy paying you to sleep with him.”
“It’s way better said than done. Trust me.”
“Whatever, dude! You’re lucky you can play around like that and no one’s feelings get hurt because the both of you know from the very start that it’s just purely sex.”
“You are,” I swayed a bit and steadied myself. “So weird about this entire thing. First, this whole thing with me and this guy is just wrong and then now it’s perfect? What the fuck?”
“Can’t a girl change her mind?”
“You’re luckier than I am.” I said.
“Me? Luckier? The fuck are you talking about, Kim Jaejoong? I am miserable.”
“You’re miserable because you choose to be. There is a perfectly decent man named Park Yoochun who has been inlove with you ever since God knows when and you’re passing all of that up because…because…wait, why are you denying him?”
“Because I don’t love him back.” Amber said firmly.
“Really?” I took another shot of the blue liquid the same time Amber did. “Not even a little bit?”
“Not even a teeny, tiny, microscopic bit.” She shook her head.
“Wow.” I said. My heart started to sink a little bit. “You sound so sure.”
“That’s because I am. I mean, I care about him. I do. But not in the way he cares about me. We’ve been friends for so long it would just feel weird.”
“That’s not an excuse. All lovers start out as friends.”
“EW!” Amber shook her head vigorously. “Don’t fucking say that.”
“You must be slightly attracted to him, though.”
“Why?”
“Amber, you did sleep with the guy regardless of your nonexistent feelings.”
Amber lowered her gaze to the table. She seemed as if she were thinking of either what to say or what she felt that night.
“What?” I asked her when she remained silent. “Not even the slightest bit of attraction existed within you when you started humping his bony ass?”
“Maybe I felt sorry for him.”
“What? That’s what that was with Yoochun? Just a pity fuck? If that’s what you’re saying Amber then that makes you-“
“A complete bitch I know.”
“A slut as well.”
“I don’t know, Jaejoong. I was drunk. It was probably just my hormones and the alcohol.”
“You don’t seem so sure anymore.”
Amber smiled then looked away. “This is stupid. Okay, fine. Maybe I was…” she hesitated before proceeding with what she was going to say. “attracted to him or whatever, but it was just that one night and it’s never going to happen again.”
“A lot of things blossom from attraction, as well.”
“Only flowers blossom.” Amber stated before downing another shot.
“We need another pitcher.” I said as I lifted the almost empty pitcher.
“Call the dumbass waiter.”
“On it.”
I called out to one of the waiters passing by and waved my hands a few times to get him to see where our table was. Amber laughed at how drunk I apparently was and finished the remaining contents of the pitcher.
I ordered a new drink with a fresh plate of nachos, feeling my throat ache for another one of those liquid blue thingies.
“Would you look at that.” Amber suddenly said as she stared at something that was behind me.
“What?” I tried to turn my head in hopes that she was referring to a possible bar fight or someone making a fool out of themselves.
“No, wait.” Amber stopped me from looking to the direction she was staring at. “There’s this really hot guy checking you out. 6 o’ clock. Turn slowly.”
I erased the smile from my face as I tried my best to be inconspicuous. I turned my head to the direction that she was referring too, pretending to gaze at someone else while I searched the crowd of people for the person Amber was talking about.
It was a bit dark making it difficult for me to spot anyone’s face but as the light randomly focused on one face my jaw almost dropped to the floor. No matter what the distance or how dark it is, his head of full hair, his olive skin, his big brown eyes, I could recognize Changmin anywhere.
My head twisted back to the front, my hands pressed onto the table as I felt my heart thump as loudly as the bass of the music blasting from the speakers.
“Did you see him?” I heard Amber speak causing my eyes to look up at her. “The one in the white shirt sitting over at one of the tables. He is so cute-“
“Amber..” I whispered even though no matter how loud I scream Changmin won’t be able to hear what I was saying.
“Yeah?”
“Th-that guy.”
“What?”
“The guy you-“
“I can’t fucking hear you, Jae. It’s like a construction site in here.”
“Amber.”
“Speak up, will you?”
“Amber,” I leaned across the table, closer to where she was. “Can you fucking hear me now?”
“Yeah yeah yeah.” She nodded as she looked at me. “What’s up?”
“That guy..”
“Uhuh?”
“He…He’s…That’s..”
“Oh God.” Amber said, her gaze averting from mine as a smile spread across her lips.
What now??? “Amber, please focus! I’m trying to tell you something.”
“You are gonna love this.”
“What?”
“Jaejoong.” It was his voice. Changmin’s voice. Not even hundreds of drunk people could drown his voice out. I could try to forget him and his fucking voice but it was as impossible as forgetting his touch and his smile.
