BUFFY ANNE SUMMERS
BELOVED SISTER
DEVOTED FRIEND
SHE SAVED THE WORLD. A LOT.
When Angel first saw it there in the caves, his first thought was that it must be wrong. It had to be wrong - perhaps another example of the Island's terrible sense of humor. But the more he thought about it, the more he knew that denial wasn't going to change anything. Deception wasn't the island's style - or at least that's what he's found so far. This place's power lay in showing people the truth. Truths about themselves that they weren't ready to face. Mementos from home, a place that they could no longer reach.
So Buffy had died. She'd told him that the year was 2003 back home. Had she been lying? Maybe she was dead and this was one of her afterlives. Either way, it became evident that she hadn't told him.
Their relationship was based on partial lies. It always was and always will be, and Angel realizes that. And he knows that he's hardly one to speak of dishonesty when he himself was keeping a secret from her - the memory of their perfect day, and what he had done to erase it.
Funny, they always had the very best of intentions.
Angel stood there in the caves for a few more moments, silent except for his regular breathing and the dripping of water echoing from somewhere inside the cavern. Tracing the letters on her tombstone one more time, Angel turned and walked away.
Out into the sun.
