All of the bodies I have examined appear to be in a comatose state; in simpler terms, completely functioning, but stuck in sleep. They cannot stay that way forever.
Additionally, judging by the circumstances of their anomaly, it was probably spawned by the scientists and therefore only temporary. I fail to understand why they would find it at all profitable to knock out most of their population and leave the small remainder of us grappling for survival.
